About this app

The Bridgman Sentencing Calculator allows you to apply discounts and uplifts to starting points as the Judge is delivering the sentence. It can also be used as a tool for reviewing written submissions.

Simply enter a starting point to begin with, then drag sliders to reflect the percentage discount for each factor. There is a slider for guilty plea, background and upbringing (s 27), remorse, previous good character, personal factors, and youth. Some discounts don't fit into those categories, or sometimes the Judge gives them in terms of months, not percentages. The miscellaneous category covers those situations and allows for either a percentage input or a specific number of months.

The Bridgman Sentencing Calculator also works for uplifts. Simply enter the uplift for previous convictions in terms of months, or use the miscellaneous slider and field.

The end sentence is then calculated and provided in different formats: eg 4 years and 6 months / 4.5 years / 54 months). The Calculator also tells you what 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3 of the end sentence would be for use when considering home detention or minimum periods of imprisonment.

The Bridgman Sentencing Calculator has another feature: the Bridgman Theorem. This is a thought experiment and submission-checking tool specifically for methamphetamine starting points under Zhang. This feature can be found at the bottom right of the screen. Once on the Bridgman Theorem page tap the ? there for more information.
