2023 AGM
We have decided to hold our AGM both online and in person in Auckland as there are important issues relating to duty solicitors which we want to discuss with our membership. We ask that duty solicitors make efforts to attend as we want to hear from you. In a nutshell we will be discussing whether the time has come for duty solicitors to “take action” in protest to the rate of $88 plus GST an hour which has now been unchanged for 27 years. If so, what direct action do duty solicitors support? We will be seeking a legal opinion about our options. Secondly, we want the views of the membership on duty solicitors being directed to undertake bail applications. An agenda will be distributed shortly.
The new Auckland Crown Solicitor has kindly agreed to host us. The meeting will be held at 5.30pm on Wednesday 29 March at Meredith Connell and online.
A link to the AGM for those wanting to attend online will be sent to members closer to the date.
The CBA's success in the past few years has been the result of an excellent and hardworking executive. It is involved in significant matters of concern to the criminal bar. The interest in the CBA is reflected in the continued contested elections for the Executive Committee, which demonstrates that the Association is a national organisation that serves the interests of the whole criminal bar with its committee being representative of the criminal bar both geographically and in terms of spheres of interest.
Committee meetings are held virtually on a monthly basis but there will be at least 3 meetings with all executive members present with the Association paying for the travel of committee members. If you have an interest in trying to make a difference please put your name forward as a candidate for the executive.
Please note you must be a current financial member* of the Association to be eligible to nominate, second a candidate, or stand for office. Any person is also free to nominate himself/herself. Nominations must be submitted by Friday 17 March 2023 along with a photo and bio.
* If you are renewing or becoming a new member in March 2023 your membership will run until 31 March 2024
